The Netflix film Perfect Strangers has now caused a very heated polemic in Arabia since it was broadcast last week. Even the politicians there also commented and criticized the film. What is the film actually showing?
Perfect Strangers is a remake of an Italian drama film titled Perfetti Sconosciutti which was aired in 2016. The film is about 7 friends who plan to have dinner together. They also made it a rule to put their phones away while eating openly and their notifications to be seen by all.
During the meal, secret messages appeared to phone calls revealing scandals that were previously unknown to each other. They just found out about the existence of infidelity to the sexual orientation of same-sex lovers in their colleagues.
It turns out that these things are still taboo to be disclosed, let alone discussed in public spaces. So Perfect Strangers sparked a wave of excited reactions in cyberspace.
People claim the film promotes moral degradation and incorporates Western lifestyles in a conservative society.
One Twitter user even called it a 'crime', claiming that the film should be banned and everyone involved should be brought to justice.

They were surprised that the film was able to pass Middle Eastern censorship and is available on Netflix uncut. One of the scenes that made a scene was the scene where the character played by Mona Zaki took off his underwear under the table (although no porn scene was shown there).
Egyptian lawyer, Ayman Mahfouz, stated that Perfect Strangers was a nuisance to the lifestyle of the people there. Mahfouz is currently preparing a lawsuit to have the film removed from Netflix.
In addition, Egyptian politician Mustafa Bakri said in a statement to the speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives that Perfect Strangers is a film full of incitement, homosexuality and infidelity.
Despite the protests, the film also garnered a lot of support from viewers and creatives, and a hashtag that translates as 'ImAlsoAPerfectStranger' appeared on Twitter.
Netflix also supported the film and its creator, releasing a statement to Variety about the backlash.
"Perfect Strangers is a fictional story that explores universal themes without taking a moral stand, instead inviting audiences to open dialogue and debate," the statement read.
"This film tackles a difficult subject through humanity and humour, led by a talented Arab cast focused on creative excellence."
