Texas Chainsaw Massacre Review: The Legendary Sadistic Killer Is Back

Gentrification and “woke” are two concepts I never imagined catalyzing in a slasher film like Texas Chainsaw Massacre which was just released on Netflix. But that's what happened. This sequel (no matter which one) from David Blue Garcia invites the audience to return to Texas and meet again with the legendary Leatherface but this time with all things that are contemporary, including social media.
The main characters in the new version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre are Melody (Sarah Yarkin) with her sister, Lila (Elsie Fisher, who debuts in the venerable Eighth Grade). The two brothers came to Texas with their friends. The goal? Certainly not a staycation. These young people are aware of seeing business opportunities and are planning to turn an empty city into a new, hip and contemporary place.

Of course they never knew Leatherface or what happened fifty years ago. But they will soon meet him especially when Dante (Jacob Latimore) sees there are still houses that have confederate flags. Dante and his friends enter the house and ask the owner of the house, Ginny (Alice Krige), to lower the flag. This confrontation causes Ginny to be rushed to the hospital which ultimately kills Ginny.

Released by director Tobe Hooper in 1974, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a terrifying horror film whose horrors are timeless. Even when watched today, the terror in the film is well preserved. There are many factors that affect the horror of the film. Apart from being a very memorable villain, the film also manages to showcase a mix of horror and well-preserved suspense. Leatherface is scary with his house and antique guns. The fact that he never reacted when killing these humans did make him scary. But Leatherface wouldn't be so happy without the "help" of his family. All the Leatherfaces in the house were not only terrible but disgusting.
