Marry Me Film Review: A Love Story of an Actress Looking for a Normal Relationship

Marry Me is a Valentine's Day celebration with a familiar star in the romantic comedy genre, Jennifer Lopez. Adapted from Bobby Crosby's graphic novel, the film, which also stars Owen Wilson, will bring the audience nostalgic for the romcom genre that once ruled Hollywood in the 1990s.

This romcom, directed by Kat Coiro, focuses on a pop star named Kat Valdez (). It is said that he will marry his girlfriend who is also a pop star, Bastian (Maluma), at a big concert they will bring with the title 'Marry Me'. Unfortunately, the plan did not go according to plan.

Moments before the concert started and Kat appeared as the bride, bad news hit. Bastian turned out to have been having an affair with his assistant and the video of the affair went viral. Stunned and humiliated, plus not wanting to be further humiliated on stage, Kat reciprocated by marrying a concertgoer she chose at random.

The 'unlucky' man was Charles Gilbert (). Charles was neither a fan nor a listener of Kat's music. He was at Kat's concert to accompany his daughter who forced him to come. Pointed at by Kat in the middle of a concert and not feeling good about turning it down, Charles is forced to accept Kat's proposal.

That decision changed Charles' life 180 degrees. He who was once just a single father and math teacher who used to sleep at 8 pm, suddenly had to get used to following the lifestyle of a glamorous and publicized diva.

On paper, the premise of Marry Me is a romcom standard that must be admittedly very predictable. However,. Mary Me was able to develop into a romantic comedy story that is simple and sweet. The storytelling point of view is also unique, not from the point of view of an ordinary person who marries an idol, but the point of view of a superstar diva artist who marries an ordinary person. This was enhanced by the stunning combination of Owen Wilson and Jennifer Lopez's chemistry.

The musical aspect with ear-friendly songs such as On My Way, Here Comes The Bridge, Marry Me from Jennifer Lopez's voice makes the storyline not boring. After two or three repetitions of the song, we automatically memorized it and eventually sang along too.

About the performance of Jennifer Lopez, do not ask again. He consistently looks stunning, making us forget that he is already 52 years old. J-Lo's appearance when singing on stage or in the recording studio is very prime, energetic and smooth. However, considering being a singer is his main profession so far, it's no wonder he was able to tune in to the role of Kat seamlessly.

Sarah Silverman ( School of Rock , Wreck it Ralph ) and John Bradley ( Game of Thrones series , Moonfall ) are the two laugh-producing characters in this film. Sarah is considered successful while Bradley feels like a failure, his role becomes just that of an assistant. Bastian's character, played by Maluma, a singer from Colombia, is also able to steal attention with his handsome face and captivating stage action.

In the midst of the dryness of the romantic comedy genre films that were released on the cinema screen, the Marry Me film seemed to be an oasis in the middle of the desert. With an ingenious story plus an energetic Jennifer Lopez prime, the result is a light and enjoyable rom-com for Valentine's Day.

Marry Me is a spectacle that gives pure happiness after watching, the experience of bucin-style smiles often appears in several scenes. The intensity is not too volatile but also not flat, and the story density can be filled with easy listening musicals. The Marry Me film will be present in Indonesian cinemas in order to welcome Valentine's Day starting February 11, 2022.
